WhatsApp now lets you disable read receipts

Just recently WhatsApp has added a new feature which let users know if their message was read by their recipients. Represented by double blue ticks, a number of people have frown upon such feature which claims to have adverse effects on relationships.

Now it seems that WhatsApp is taking these complaints seriously. In their latest update for Android (WhatsApp version 2.11.444), there is now a setting that lets you opt out from sending Read Receipts.

At time of writing, the latest update isn’t available through Google Play Store yet. If you want it now, you can download the latest WhatsApp APK file. Just take note that you’ll need to allow apps of “Unknown sources” in your phone’s security setting before installing. To disable read receipts for good, just head over to “Settings > Account > Privacy” as shown above.

Take note that by turning this off, you would no longer see if your messages have been read by the other party, which is pretty fair. We would expect the same update to trickle to iOS users as well. For jailbreak users, you can disable Read Receipts using Cydia’s WhatsApp Read Receipt Disabler.
