Apart from having waterproof devices, Sony is also known for making wafer-thin tablets that’s also waterproof. Alongside with the Xperia Z3, Sony has gone smaller in size with the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact that offers a more practically sized 8″ display. At 6.4mm, this is the thinnest compact tablet and its the same thickness as its current full sized Xperia Z2 Tablet. In terms of weigh, it is light as well at 280g, which is still heavier than the Huawei MediaPad X1 at 239g. Its closest contender in terms of specs would be the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4, which weighs 298g and has a thickness of 6.6mm.
With Sony, there’s no compromises on the hardware as it is powered by the same 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM that’s found on its current Xperia Z3 flagship. The front 8″ IPS display does 1920×1200 pixels resolution which gives a pixel density of 283ppi. It also gets a 16GB of storage which can be expanded with microSD up to 128GB.
In terms of camera, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact gets similar 8.1MP main and 2.2MP front cameras from its 10.1″ Xperia Z2 Tablet. With a smaller display, the battery is smaller too at 4,500mAh capacity.
For the second half of this year, Sony has taken waterproof up to another level with a higher IP68 rated resistance. This allows you to submerge a tablet below 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes in fresh water.
To bring big screen entertain to a mobile device, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact also supports PS4 Remote Play. So if you have a PS4 at home that’s connected to WiFi, you can play your games remotely on the tablet that’s hooked up to a DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless controller. To make it seamless, Sony has a specially designed Game Control Mount (GCM10) just for that purpose. The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact also gets a pair of front facing stereo speakers for a better audio experience.
Considering most consumers prefer the practicality of a smaller tablet, the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact might just fit in. For those owning a PS4 at home, the ability to play your games remotely would be an interesting experience to have. The only question remain is the price and availability. Hopefully Sony Mobile would do a better job in terms of price as its full sized Xperia Z2 Tablet is quite steep compared to its high-end rivals.
