UPDATE: The Mi Pad is now offered at RM879 for the 16GB version.

Xiaomi’s very own tablet, the Mi Pad had went on sale in China last week. If you can’t wait to get your hands on one in Malaysia, grey importer DirectD is now selling the Mi Pad for RM999. This is the 16GB version and it is available only in white colour. Officially, the Mi Pad 16GB is priced at 1,499 Yuan (about RM776) while the 64GB is listed at 1,699 Yuan (about RM880) in mainland China.

To recap on the specs, the Mi Pad features a high resolution 7.9″ IPS display that does the same 2048×1536 pixels as the iPad mini with Retina display. The heart of the Mi Pad is main star of the show with its 2.2GHz Quad-Core Nvidia Tegra K1 chipset which promises desktop level gaming on a mobile device. It is mated to 2GB RAM and the 16GB storage unit that’s available here is also expandable with microSD up to 128GB. The Mi Pad is released as a WiFi only device and there’s no option for mobile 3G/4G connectivity.

For taking pictures, it gets a 8MP camera at the back and a rather high 5MP shooter for the front. The Mi Pad is probably the best bang for the buck compact tablet and it is the only one that’s commercially running on Nvidia’s latest processor. You can see how it compares against other flagship tablets including the new Galaxy Tab S. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check out our hands-on with the Mi Pad and you can watch the video after the break.

Of course, take note that these are AP sets from China and the warranty isn’t officially covered by Xiaomi’s authorised service centres. In terms of software, it is likely to be running on a Chinese optimised firmware with its own App Store. For the adventurous, these are minor hurdles which can be overcome by side loading your normal apps. For more info, head over to DirectD’s Facebook page.
