The compact Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is now official and it is seen as the smaller brother of its flagship Samsung Galaxy S5. While the internals are a step below its flagship model, the key differentiator features such as the water and dust resistance properties, heart rate sensor and finger print scanner have been maintained on the Galaxy S5 mini. It is also interesting to point out that the microUSB port underneath is exposed without protection of flaps or covers which is likely to be protected with water resistant coating like Liquipel.
In terms of specs, the Galaxy S5 mini gets a smaller 4.5″ Super AMOLED display that does HD 720p resolution. Powering the device is a mid-level Quad-Core 1.4GHz processor (likely to be Exynos) that’s mated to 1.5GB of RAM and it also gets 16GB of on-board storage. There’s also a microSD expansion slot but it supports only up to a maximum of 64GB (Galaxy S5: 128GB Max). Taking photos are taken care by its 8MP main shooter with assisted flash while the front gets a 2.1MP camera.
Like its bigger brother, it runs on Android 4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz UI along with other proprietary features like Ultra Power Saving Mode, Kids Mode, S Health and Private Mode. Also included is an IR blaster which can be used as a universal remote and it also supports faster 4G LTE connectivity. With a 2,100mAh battery on-board, the Galaxy S5 mini weighs 120 grams and it is 9.1mm thick.
The design retains the same perforated back cover appearance and is available with similar colour choices such as Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold.
