Nokia announces Android-powered X2

Nokia’s curious experiment with Android continues with the announcement of the Nokia X2, an updated version of the Nokia X.

So what’s new with the Nokia X2? The most obvious change you will notice is the navigation buttons, where the previous Nokia X features just the one back button, the X2 introduces a home button in addition to the back button for easier navigation. Screen size gets a bump up as well, with the X2 sporting a 4.3-inch display compared to the 4-incher on the X. Despite the increase in screen size, the display resolution remains the same at 800×480 pixels which means the X2 display pushes a lowly 217ppi. On the upside there’s a double-tap to wake feature and the screen incorporates Nokia’s ClearBlack display technology.

In terms of hardware, the X2 is better specced compared to the X but its internals is still considered bargain-basement with a dual-core Snapdragon 200 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM (1GHz dual-core MSM8225 and 512MB RAM on the X). Battery capacity is up as well with the X2 packing a 1,800mAh battery compared to the 1,500mAh unit in the X. The main camera is also updated on the Nokia X2 with a 5MP sensor mated to a f/2.4 lens that’s capable of shooting 720p videos at 30fps. You also get a VGA front camera. Internal memory has been increased as well from just 4GB in the Nokia X to 7GB in the Nokia X2. There’s also a microSD expansion slot that takes up to 32GB cards.

Is the Nokia X2 coming to Malaysia? We’re not sure. It looks like the device is targeted squarely at emerging markets like India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Bangladesh and China. Even if the X2 is coming to Malaysia we can’t find a reason why anyone would want to buy this over better competition, like the Motorola Moto E, that is probably similarly priced or cheaper.
