Samsung Galaxy Tab S flagship tablet announced in 8.4″ and 10.5″ sizes

Samsung today has announced the Galaxy Tab S which is available in both 8.4″ and 10.5″ sizes. The Korean maker claims to have currently doubled its tablet market share from 7.6% in 2011 to 22% in 2014. With strong commitment to the tablet business, the Galaxy Tab S is hailed to be their best tablet ever.

During the launch, Samsung says that tablets are mainly use for video content and hence the need for better display quality. To deliver just that, they have finally gone back to Super AMOLED displays which does a WXQGA resolution of 2560×1600. This pushes a pixel density of 288ppi (pixels per inch) for the Tab S 10.5 and a higher 359ppi on the Tab S 8.4 which is the same as their previous Galaxy TabPro 8.4.

While most device makers are shouting Pixel Density for the display, Samsung focuses on Pixel Quality where Super AMOLED displays offer better colours and individual pixel clarity. Since each pixels are individually lit up and turned off for pure blacks, the Tab S boasts better power efficiency with up to 11 hours of video playback. This also means that its Ultra Power Saving Mode is possible too where the display is switched to black and white for longer battery life.

UPDATE: Check out the Galaxy Tab S, Galaxy TabPro, Galaxy NotePro and Galaxy Tab 4 comparison here.

The Galaxy Tab S also gets a high-end power house as well with Exynos 5 Octa-core processor (4x 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 & 4x 1.9GHz Cortex-A15) for the WiFi version while the 4G LTE variant gets a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Both processors are mated to 3GB of RAM with the option of 16GB or 32GB storage options that’s expandable via microSD up to 128GB.

For imaging both will be having a 8MP camera at the back with LED flash while the front gets a front facing 2.1MP units. In terms of battery, the Tab S 8.4 gets 4,900mAh capacity while its larger Tab S 10.5 has a bigger 7,900mAh battery. Out of the box it runs on the latest Android 4.4.2 and gets the same productivity suite as the TabPro/NotePro series like SideSync 3.0 which allows you to access your smart phone in a screen overlay on the tablet. The front home button also doubles up as a finger print scanner which works like the Galaxy S5. If you have multiple users in the family, the finger print scanner allows instant access to each individual private mode. This is made possibly with KNOX and it supports up to 8 users.

Dimension wise, this is Samsung’s thinnest and lightest tablet yet at just 6.6mm thick for both models and weighing from just 294g for its Tab S 8.4. Meanwhile its larger Tab S 10.5 weighs 465g for WiFi and 467g for the LTE version. The iPad Air with its 9.7″ display is 7.5mm thick and weighs 469 grams. However the thinnest and lightest full size tablet title still goes to Sony’s Xperia Z2 tablet which is only 6.4mm thin and weighs just 426g for the WiFi version.

For accessory you have a choice of Simple Cover or Book Cover which comes in various colours. If you need to type with a laptop-like feel, there’s a seamlessly designed Bluetooth Keyboard which doubles up as a case available for both Tab S 8.4 and Tab S 10.5.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S is available in both Titanium Bronze and Dazzling White. It will be coming soon to Malaysia considering the Tab S 10.5″ 4G LTE version has been spotted in SIRIM’s certification database. In the US, the Tab S 10.5″ WiFi version is priced at US$499 (about RM1,599) while the 8.4″ at US$399 (about RM1,279).
