The Samsung Galaxy W which was a mid-tier smart phone 3 years ago has been given a reboot as a 7″ phablet exclusive to SKT in South Korea. It is seen as an upgrade over the previous Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 with 7.0″ TFT display that does 1280×720 pixels resolution.
While it stretches into the 7″ tablet category, the Galaxy W tries to be a smart phone with thinner bezels and a faux leather back cover that’s similar to the Galaxy Note 3. It runs on a quad-core 1.2GHz processor mated to 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage with microSD expansion slot.
Priced at 499,400 Won (about RM1574), the Galaxy W is quite expensive and you would be better off with the current Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 that’s priced at RM999. It gets the same processor, RAM and storage and you’ll get a bigger battery capacity at 4,000mAh versus the 3,200mAh provided on the Galaxy W. On the plus side, the Tab 4 7.0 runs on the latest Android 4.4 KitKat while the Galaxy W is still running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box.
The Galaxy W however offers better camera with a mainstream 8MP main shooter and a front facing 2MP unit. For faster connectivity, it also supports high-speed 4G LTE-A as well. The weight is more pocketable too at 245g which is lighter than the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 that tips the scale at 281g. The Galaxy W is available in Black, White and Red colours which you can view after the break.
