Samsung Gear Fit not running on Tizen OS. Might not support third-party apps.

The Samsung Gear Fit is one of the coolest looking wearable right now that features a unique curved Super AMOLED display and comes with a heart rate sensor underneath. It was launched together with Samsung’s Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smart watch during last month’s Mobile World Congress.

While the Gear 2 smart watches run on its new Tizen OS, the Gear Fit is reported to be using a very basic operating system instead. Called RTOS which stands for Real Time Operating System, it is actually very simple and is dedicated to perform a specific number of tasks efficiently. As a result, it pushes 3 to 4 days of battery life while using less memory and processing power compared to its more capable Gear 2 smart watch.

This also means there’s virtually no room to allow 3rd party developers to create customised apps for the Gear Fit and it is unlikely that Samsung would release a software development kit as well. Despite such limitations, it is still a worthy companion for your Samsung Galaxy devices as it also alerts you for incoming calls, SMS, instant messages and calendar invites. After all, the Gear Fit is essential a sports band that focuses on heart rate monitoring and counting steps. If you’re looking for a smart watch that has the potential to do more, you probably might want to check out the Gear 2 as an alternative.

Check out our hands-on with the Gear Fit after the break.
