Alcatel One Touch Idol X+ and Idol Alpha now available in Malaysia

Alcatel has launched its new One Touch Idol X+ smart phone which features a 5″ Full HD display and powered by a true Octa-Core processor at RM1,299. The Idol X+ is an upgrade over its current Idol X and comes with a 2GHz Octa-Core Mediatek processor mated to 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The model which we are getting here comes with Dual-SIM slots but it lacks microSD card for expansion. Connectivity wise, it doesn’t have support for faster 4G LTE but settles for a decent 3G HSPA+ with speeds up to 21Mbps. For taking pictures, the rear has a 13MP camera for the job while selfie shots are handled by a front facing 2MP shooter.

Juicing up the device is a 2,500mAh capacity battery which is 500mAh more and adds a negligible 1mm to its thickness compared to its current Idol X. According to Alcatel, the new Octa-Core processor is more power efficient, with up to 18% improvement over its Quad-Core equivalent when watching Full HD videos. At the press conference, Alcatel has indicated that a larger 32GB version will be coming sometime later. As a special launch promotion, Alcatel is also bundling its BoomBand, a Bluetooth connected fitness tracker band with the Idol X+. A pair of JBL in-ear headphones is also included as part of its limited time promo as well.

Also launched is the premium looking Alcatel One Touch Idol Alpha that comes with an all round metallic frame and transparent glass design. Priced at RM1,099, the Idol Alpha comes with a 4.7″ IPS HD 720p display, 1.2GHz Quad-Core MediaTek processor with 1GB RAM and 16GB of storage. Overall it is rather sleek with a 7.5mm thickness and the front display is protected by with Dragontail glass. Like the Idol X+, it also comes with a 13MP main camera but over at the front, it gets a 1.3MP camera for front shots. Strangely it lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio. However if you plan to use headphones, there will be a micro USB to headphone jack adapter that’s included in the box.

In terms of Android version, both are currently running on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The newer Android 4.4 KitKat is said to be coming as well via Over The Air (OTA) update but Alcatel didn’t reveal any specific roll out dates.

If you’re interesting to get one right now, both smart phones are now available exclusively at their Roadshow at Plaza Lowyat that’s happening until this Sunday, 23rd March 2014. After that, it will be available through its dealers nationwide.

We’ll be getting a hands-on with both devices soon, so watch this space for our first impressions. In the mean time, you can check out some hands-on shots taken from today’s Alcatel One Touch Roadshow event at Lowyat Plaza.
