DiGi’s new 4G LTE plans now support smartphones

Good news for DiGi subscribers, the operator’s new DG Smartplans support 4G LTE on smartphones.

Previously DiGi’s 4G LTE plans are limited to dongles and MiFis but now with the new plans, smartphone users can connect to DiGi’s 4G network seamlessly. However there’s a catch, you might need to swap your current DiGi SIM card with a 4G LTE one and it will cost RM10 for a standard or micro SIM while nano SIM cards will set you back RM20. And if you’re an iPhone 5 user, you might want to know that DiGi’s Band 7 (2600MHz) network does not support your device.

The new DG Smartplans offer additional data quota to accommodate the faster speeds provided by 4G LTE. Full details of the new plans after the break.

There are 4 plans available from RM50/month with 2GB data to RM148 with a larger 6GB quota with bundled SMS and voice calls including IDD. The Basic SmartPlan 50 comes with 2GB data and bundled 200 SMS within DiGi network.

Next there’s the SmartPlan 78 and 108 with 3GB and 5GB respectively with bundled calls and SMS to all networks. For heavy duty users that make lots of calls and SMS, there’s the SmartPlan 148 which comes with 600 minutes of calls and 600 SMS along with 6GB of data.

Like the previous SmartPlans from DiGi, we still don’t like the fact that they split the internet quota based on usage. DiGi fixes an allocated quota to be used with “Smart Apps” which includes Facebook, Twitter & WhatsApp. This takes up 1GB on SmartPlan 78, 2GB on SmartPlan 108 and 3GB on SmartPlan 148. This makes it rather restrictive and we would prefer if DiGi gives more freedom on internet usage.

Upon depleting your quota, speeds will be throttled down but you still can surf at normal speed using Opera mini web browser. To make the plan more appealing, SmartPlan 78 and above will get free DiGi to DiGi calls during the weekend.
