Sony sells off VAIO computer business. Puts more focus on smart phones & tablets

It is now confirmed that Sony is selling off its VAIO Computer Business. The move is said to be sparked by declining PC sales and Sony’s renewed focus on their Xperia smart phones and tablet devices in line with current technology trends.

JIP (Japan Industrial Partners) will officially take over the business and existing customers will still continue to get after sales customer service. Sony will cease all planning, design and development after its Spring 2014 product line up. When JIP regains control, it will focus on consumer and corporate sales in Japan first before considering to expand into other markets.

Sony’s VAIO brand which stands for Visual Audio Intelligent Organizer has been in the business since 1996. They have made their mark with cutting edge design and have been making iconic ultra portable devices which includes the Sony VAIO UX micro computer. Their current offering the Sony VAIO Pro series is also seen as a serious contender that’s even lighter than the MacBook Air.
