Wearable device is seen as the next big thing with the influx of smart watches and glasses launching this year. Now HTC has indicated strong interest to enter the segment as its Chairwoman Cher Wang has announced plans to release a wearable device in time for this year end shopping season. The key challenges according to HTC is battery and LCD light problems which are critical for consumer experience.
Smart watches aren’t new to HTC and they have started looking into it for a couple of years now. Its CEO Peter Chou once mentioned that they had worked together with Microsoft on a watch but it never made it as a final product. He acknowledge the importance of smart watches and assures that they won’t be releasing a half baked product.
At the moment, Samsung and Sony are the 2 key smart phone players that have released their own smart watches. It will be interesting to see how HTC would use its premium aluminium handset design approach on a wrist.
