Sony announces 6″ Xperia T2 Ultra and music centric Xperia E1

Barely a week after its Xperia Z1 Compact announcement, Sony has just announced two new devices with a 6″ phablet – the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra and an entry level but music oriented Xperia E1.

The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra slots right between its mammoth 6.44″ Xperia Z Ultra and 5″ Sony Xperia Z1 in terms of screen size but packs a rather mid-level hardware. This puts it in the same mid-tier phablet category as the 6″ Nokia Lumia 1320 and 6.3″ Samsung Galaxy Mega.

Meanwhile the Xperia E1 is another entry level 4″ device but it sets itself apart with a claimed loudest high quality speakers rated at 100db. Read on to find out more on the 2 models.

Sony Xperia T2 Ultra

The Xperia T2 Ultra comes with a 6″ HD Triluminous Display that does a resolution of 1280×720, pushing a pixel density of 245ppi which is similar to the Lumia 1320. Underneath, it runs on a 1.4GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 400 (MSM8928) processor with 1GB of RAM bundled with 8GB of on-board storage that’s expandable with microSD.

It also comes with a 13MP Exmor RS camera with assisted flash (a step above Z Ultra’s 8MP shooter without flash) that’s capable of shooting Full HD videos and a front facing 1.1MP camera. Powering the device is a rather large 3,000mAh battery and overall it weighs 170.6 grams with a rather slim 7.65mm profile. Out of the box, it runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Although it looks rather identical as its high end Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra siblings, the Xperia T2 Ultra doesn’t come with its signature water and dust resistant capabilities. However you still get 4G LTE connectivity and there’s also a dual-SIM variant available depending on markets.

Sony Xperia E1

Next is the Xperia E1 which despite its entry level credentials, has something in store for music lovers. As you would expect on an entry level device, the front comes with a 4″ TFT display that does 800×480 pixels resolution and runs on dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor with 512MB of RAM. Internally it has 4GB of storage which is expandable with microSD. There’s also a 3MP camera which is capable of shooting HD 720p videos but lacks assisted flash.

Juicing up the Xperia E1 is a decent 1,750mAh battery which is removable and overall it weighs 120 grams. With music enthusiast at heart, the Xperia E1 comes with a dedicated Walkman button which follows Sony’s past trend of Walkman phones. Just like the Xperia T2 Ultra, there’s also a dual-sim version as well.

The last time someone tried to make the loudest phone, it was Nokia with its Nokia 600 speakerphone that’s rated at 106 Phons. However the product was quietly dropped before going to market. Now with the Xperia E1, its speakerphone is rated at 100dB which claims to be crystal clear.

To put things in perspective, 100dB is as loud as a motorcycle and NIOSH recommends a maximum exposure to such loud condition at no more than 15 minutes continuously. It is interesting to see how the Xperia E1 would perform against the likes of HTC One’s dual-stereo boom sound speakers.
