Instagram Direct offers private photo and video messaging. Available on iOS & Android

Instagram, which has gain popularity for its photo and video sharing has received a major update. With over 150 million users worldwide, the visual sharing service now introduces private messaging with its Instagram Direct.

Carrying the new version number 5.0, you’ll notice a new Inbox icon on the top right which lets you send photos or videos to individual or a group of friends in private. Just like the usual Instagram usage, the private mode also lets you add the usual filters, likes, comments and you can even see who has seen the picture or video.

The new update is now available and for those who don’t have it yet, you can download it for iOS and Android. Windows Phone 8 users might need to wait a little longer as it is still in BETA.
