The LG G Flex is a Korea only model at the moment but if you want to get your hands on one, you can. For RM3,599, you can own what LG claims is the world’s first real curved smartphone available from grey importers directd here.
Being a grey import, you can forget about an official warranty from LG. So take this as fair warning that whatever you buy that’s not officially available in Malaysia, you’re pretty much on your own if things go south.
So what do you get for RM3,599? Well for starters, LG says the pronouncedly curved shape of the G Flex brings tangible benefits over a conventional flat device. This includes a reduction in the distance between the users mouth and device’s microphone and an increase in audio output by 3db. On top of this, LG claims that the G Flex’s display when viewed in landscape mode offer an “IMAX-like experience” during video playback and gaming.
However, while most smart phones today including the the Samsung Galaxy Round — other curved screen smartphone which is also available here — offers Full HD 1080p resolution, the G Flex falls short with the 6-inch display pushing out only 720p resolution. In terms of pixel density G Flex on the low side by today’s standards at just 245 ppi.
Beyond the curved screen, the G Flex brings with it a list of unique technologies. The 6-inch screen, for example, is the largest plastic-based OLED display in the market right now. Where most OLED displays in smartphones are glass-based, each pixel in the G Flex’s P-OLED screen has three sub-pixels which can deliver a brighter display and a more precise colour reproduction. The G Flex’s battery is also unique, developed by LG Chem, the 3,500mAh battery is the first ever curved battery in production for a smartphone. Another unique feature is the self-healing capability of the G Flex enabled by a special coating that repairs scratches and minor damage. You can view a demo of the the G Flex’s self-healing capability here.
The LG G Flex also carries similar features from the LG G2 such as Knock on and the rear mounted key buttons with colour illumination. In terms of hardware, it packs a capable 2.26GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It also packs a 13MP rear camera with a 2MP front facing unit along with 4G LTE support including LTE Advance. Overall, it weighs 177 grams and has a thickness of 8.7mm.
