Before the year is out, we’ve seen Samsung and LG releasing their curved display smart phones in a bid to showcase their capabilities with flexible display. If being slightly curved is considered too mainstream, Samsung is said to be working on a radical smart phone design that comes with 3 sided wrapped around display. It is said to be making its way to upcoming Galaxy S or Note series and each side of the display will work independently. Perhaps the side and back displays could function as a notification LCD when the front screen is not visible.
When Samsung presented its Youm concept as shown above, it opens up a possibility of having to peek on your notifications on the sides while the phone is on the table. With flexible displays getting a lot of hype lately, we could expect more smart phone manufacturers to jump on the bandwagon in 2014. Even Apple is rumoured to be working with a curved smart phone glass.
No doubt a flexible display opens up new design possibilities but its practical use and critical advantages over typical conventional flat design is yet to be seen.
