The Nokia Lumia 1520 which was revealed recently boasts a rather large 6″ display that does Full HD 1080p resolution. However little has been said about its display technology responsible for its outdoor viewing claim.
Many smart phone makers claim that their displays are readable in broad daylight but they are mostly due to brighter displays rated with couple of hundreds of nits. While their claim is somewhat true, pumping up the brightness to the max isn’t really power efficient and as a result, the battery life would suffer.
On the latest Lumia 1520, Nokia uses Assertive Display technology by Apical which improves outdoor viewing without the need of changing brightness at all. Modeled after the way our eyes adapt to various lighting conditions, the Assertive Display adjusts the colour and contrast ratio of each pixel depending on surrounding lighting levels. The active display tweaking happens rather seamlessly that users would not notice any change. With Assertive Display, anyone can now read or watch videos even under direct sunlight.
To put this to the test, they have compared the Lumia 1520 with a Galaxy Note 3 at full brightness settings and the outcome is impressive. Watch the demo after the break.
