UPDATE: MEMS Camera maker Digital Optic has clarified that the Nexus 5 will not feature the MEMS camera. It will be available on the Oppo N1 instead.

The upcoming Nexus 5 is said to feature an amazing camera but from the recent spec leaks, the 8MP camera seems to be a notch down below today’s flagship smart phones that’s pushing 13MP.

However there’s more than meets the eye as the 8MP shooter is said to be based on a new MEMS (Microelectromechanical technology) camera. MEMS is said to be quicker, energy efficient and more compact in size compared to the typical VCM (Voice Coil Motor) module typically used in smart phones as shown above. The result is an ultra fast auto focus response time up to 7 times quicker.

The Nexus 5 camera will have an aperture of f/2.4 with a sensor size of 1/3.2″ and pixel size of 1.4 micron. On paper, the specs doesn’t seem to be a challenge with the current crop of photography focused smart phones that boasts larger sensors and higher megapixel count. Having instant auto focus is great in capturing epic moments but it all boils down to picture quality at the end of the day. The Nexus 5 is expected to be revealed sometime at the end of this month.

Watch the MEMS camera in action after the break.
