LG has announced its new G Pad 8.3 tablet, marking a return into the tablet segment after almost a 2 years wait. The new tablet looks like a serious contender for the 2013 version of Nexus 7 and Apple’s iPad mini. The last tablet we’ve seen is their 8.9″ LG Optimus Pad which comes with dual 5MP cameras in line with its 3D craze alongside its LG Optimus 3D. Sadly the 3D phenomenon didn’t catch on after that.
Over at the front, it comes with a 8.3″ display that pushes 1920×1200 pixels resolution which is similar as the Nexus 7. Powering the device is a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz that’s mated with 2GB of RAM and comes with 16GB of storage. In the imaging department, the G Pad 8.3 comes with a 5MP main shooter and a front facing 1.3MP camera. At just 8.3mm in thickness, it still manages to pack a rather generous 4,600mAh battery. As comparison, the new Nexus 7 is 8.7mm thick and comes with 3,950mAh of battery.
From the looks of the design, it looks rather sleek with an aluminium looking back. This kinda reminds of the early Galaxy Tab 7.7 which feels premium to hold. Pocketability wise, we are not to sure for a 8.3″ tablet but LG has managed to narrow down the width to 126.5mm which is 8.2mm less than the smaller screen 7.9″ iPad mini (134.7mm) but it is slightly wider than the Nexus 7’s 114mm width.
A nice touch from LG is a convergence feature called QPair which syncs up the G Pad 8.3 tablet with your smart phone. This allows messages and call notifications to appear on the tablet for a seamless experience. The good news is that it is not limited to LG smart phones and it works with other Android devices that’s running Jelly Bean and above. Just like the LG G2, it also comes with Knock On feature which wakes the screen by simply knocking on the glass.
