The water resistant Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is now available in Malaysia with the price tag of RM1,899. This is Samsung’s answer to the water friendly devices coming from Sony such as the Xperia Z, Xperia ZR and the recently launched Xperia Z Ultra.
In terms of specs, it is rather similar to the original Galaxy S4 but with some minor changes here and there. While the front 5″ Full HD 1080p display size is retained, the S4 Active uses the standard TFT LCD display instead of Super AMOLED that’s found on the S4 models. Powering the device is a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor (similar to the S4 LTE version) with 2GB of RAM and it comes with 16GB of on-board storage. Another change is the main camera which is swapped with a 8MP shooter instead. For those who are looking forward to get the fastest mobile internet speeds, don’t fret as the S4 Active supports 4G LTE connectivity as well.
In terms of size, the Galaxy S4 Active is obviously bulkier than the standard S4 but comes with more rugged body construction. It weighs 153 grams (23 grams more than S4) and has a slimness of 9.1mm (1.2mm thicker). Rated with an IP67 water and dust resistance, the S4 active can be submerged under 1 metre for 30 minutes which is similar to the Xperia Z. On the plus side, the volume rocker on the S4 Active doubles up as a camera shutter button which is useful when taking pictures underwater. The back cover is still removable despite being a submersible device, giving access to the 2,600mAh battery, microSD and micro SIM slots.
