Losing a device can be shocking and frustrating at the same time. Worse is when the phone is on silent and there’s no way to hear the device if you tried calling. For Android users, now there’s an official solution for this with Android Device Manager. This lets you locate the device on the map and have the option to ring the device at the loudest volume. If all hope of retrieving the device is lost, there’s an option to wipe your personal data from the device.
In terms of availability, it will be rolled out within this month and it is applicable for devices running Android 2.2 and above. If you’re eager to have the feature running, the unofficial APK link is available here but it is rather pointless since the web based phone tracking interface is not running on Google Play.
It took Google long enough to release a native phone tracking solution and such feature isn’t entirely new. Apple has its own Find my iPhone feature on iCloud for quite some time already. For other Android devices, the respective manufacturers have their own phone tracking service such as HTC Sense, Sony’s myXperia and Samsung’s Find my Mobile.
