Fujitsu Invents Technology that Turns Paper Into Touchscreen

Here’s something interesting.

Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a new interface technology that makes it possible for users to have a touchscreen experience on real world objects like paper. The system uses existing technology and equipment like off-the-shelf webcam and standard projector.

The technology allows users to easily and quickly convert information from a printed document into digital data. In also allows content providers to augment printed materials with interactive information like video and audio to prive additional information. The system is also smart enough to compensate for things like a curvature of a page in a book allowing it to adapt to content in various formats. In addition, the system can also detect the differences between normal hand movements to specific gestures to control the interface eliminating unwanted inputs.

The potential uses for this technology is tremendous, we can see it being useful in libraries, restaurants and in offices. Imagine instead of asking the waiter for more details about a particular dish, the system can project an interactive menu with video and sound to give you the information that you want. Cool stuff.
