Imagine being able to unlock your front door with your smart phone without the need of changing the entire lock. That’s what Lockitron aims to achieve with its bolt-on solution that uses NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi.
What’s cool is that it allows you to unlock remotely over WiFi and the Bluetooth 4.0 functionality lets you unlock the door automatically when you are near the door. There’s even an access management system which lets you manage access for family members and guest. Whenever someone knocks on the door or unlocks it manually by a key, it will also send a notification to your smart phone. While it has an Android and iOS app, Lockitron can also be activated by SMS.
They are accepting pre-orders now on their site for US$149 for a limited time. According to their FAQ, they accept international orders but they will inform you of shipping cost once they have finalised the pre-orders. The first batch of Lockitrons are expected to ship out by March 2013.
