The long awaited ASUS Eee Pad MeMo 171 is finally announced here in Malaysia. Carrying the price tag of RM1,599, the Eee pad MeMo 171 is a 7″ Android tablet which lets you make voice calls through a mobile network. While there are other hybrid tablets with phone features like the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Tab 7.0 Plus, the MeMo lets you answer calls with the smaller MeMic Bluetooth headset instead of putting the entire tablet next to your head. The MeMic headset comes with a transparent monochrome display that display text messages, calendar updates and lets you control your music.
Powering the MeMo is a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor which is accompanied with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage that’s expandable with microSD. In terms of display, it uses a 7″ Super IPS+ that pushes 1280×800 pixels resolution with brightness rated at 600 nits. To offer more versatility, the Memo also comes with a digital stylus that lets you write or draw through its MyPainter app. The stylus is easily tucked away into the silo at the sides of the tablet.
There’s a 5MP camera at the back and a 1.2MP camera at the front. At time of availability, the MeMo still runs on Android 3.2 but it is said to be upgradable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Compared to the usual tablets, the Memo is slightly thick at 12.85mm and it weighs 400 grams.
In terms of specs, it isn’t really that ground breaking as the Transformer Prime but for those who are looking for something different, this might be worth considering. Overall it is a tablet + phone + remote headset + stylus combination, which is one of ASUS’s innovative hybrid tablet designs like the Transformer and PadFone.
