Little by little, day by day, bits and pieces of information about the much anticipated Samsung Galaxy S III is revealed. This time around, we find information about the kind of processor that Samsung plans equip in its latest flagship Android smartphone.
An unnamed Samsung executive revealed to the Korea Times that one of the company’s 32-nanometer chips will debut in the Galaxy S III.
The unnamed Samsung executive made the comment after it was revealed that the company would be reducing its reliance on Qualcomm processors in favour of its own processors.
Last year, Samsung updated the kernel specification for its new processor on Kernel.org, stating that it would be marketed as a Exynos 4412 chip that would feature four processing-cores. The chip has a 32-nanometer quad-core design with ARM Cortex-A9 cores capable of running at speeds up to 1.5GHz.
Quad-core processors are the talk of the town at the moment and it’s safe to assume Samsung to bring quad-core processing power to its top of the line Android device in the form of Exynos 4412 — although nothing is certain at this point. Performance-wise, the 32-nanometer processor will provide up to 26% more than Samsung’s current 45-nanometer line-up. At the same time the new 32-nanometer core is expected to yield a 50% or more improvement on battery life.
At this point, it is not known which GPU Samsung intends to pair with the quad-core Exynos chip. Many will be looking to compare Samsung’s overall offering with Nvidia’s Tegra 3 technology, Apple’s A5X processor and Qualcomm’s new dual-core Krait chips (which are being used in the HTC One series of devices).
With the frequency of rumours about the Galaxy S III increasing, we can expect a launch or at least an announcement of the device to happen soon. Samsung has said that it will debut the Galaxy S III before the second half of the year at an event organised specifically to announce the device.
A much talked about date is May 22 where Samsung might hold an event in London ahead of the 2012 Olympics. It is widely speculated that Samsung will leverage on the global event to market the Galaxy S III. Nothing is official at the moment and all we can do now is wait for more info to be revealed.
