The Motorola RAZR is reborn

Update: Official spec sheet here

Motorola has just announced the revival of its iconic RAZR brand with the launch of its latest Android powerhouse and we can’t wait to get our hands on this sexy beast!

At just 7.1mm thin (compare: Samsung Galaxy S II 8.5mm, iPhone 4S 9.3mm), the new RAZR is, as Motorola claims, the world’s thinnest smartphone. Yet its svelte body belies the impressive technology that packed within.

At the core of the RAZR’s construction is a pure stainless steel frame that’s designed to give the device strength and rigidity to withstand abuse like being repeatedly squished in back pockets. The RAZR’s back plate is constructed in Kevlar (first time we’re heard of this in a consumer grade smartphone) and its 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced display is strengthened with Gorilla Glass. Motorola says the display offers a higher contrast ratio and richer colors than that of the iPhone 4S.

The RAZR also features a unique nanocoating that protects the device from water. The protection even extends to the highly sensitive electronic innards of the device.

Running the latest — not for long — Android Gingerbread 2.3.5, the RAZR is powered by a 1.2Ghz Ti OMAP 4460 dual-core processor with 1GB RAM and 32GB of on-board storage (16 GB on board and 16 GB microSD card pre-installed. You also get an 8MP HD camera with full 1080p HD video recording capabilities in addition to a 1.3MP front camera. The RAZR also packs a large 1,780mAh battery to give the device 12.5 hours of talk time or 8.5 days of standby time. It’s worth pointing out that the battery on the RAZR is non-removable.

In terms of availability, the RAZR will launch globally in November. Motorola Singapore have already announced that the RAZR will hit that market on November 11. We’re expecting the device to come to Malaysia within weeks of that day if not on the same day.

In terms of pricing, everything is unconfirmed now but we don’t expect the RAZR to go beyond RM2,200 considering its closest rival, the Samsung Galaxy S II is currently retailing for RM1,899.

There’s no denying that the RAZR is good looking device that packs quite a punch, but we’re disappointed that it won’t be running Ice Cream Sandwich. Then again, Gingerbread, especially in its 2.3.5 guise is already currently the best Android available, so it might really be an issue after all.

What are your thoughts on the Motorola RAZR?
