Samsung Galaxy Note – 5.3″ Android smart phone

Samsung has revealed the Samsung Galaxy Note, a brand new 5.3″ Android phone-tablet device at their Unpacked event. At 5.3″, it does seem to fill the void Dell has left behind. However this is not any ordinary smartphone enlarged for tablet usage.

At the front, the Galaxy Note has a 5.3″ HD Super AMOLED WXGA display which pushes 1280×800 resolution – the highest we’ve seen for a screen this size. In terms of pixel density, it does 285 ppi (Pixels per inch) which is still below iPhone 4’s retina display of 326 ppi.

Powering the device is a 1.4GHz dual core processor and it also comes with 16GB of storage which is expandable with microSD. Like the Galaxy S II, it has a 8MP camera at the back and a 2MP at the front. Size wise, it manages to maintain a slim profile at 9.65mm and it weighs 178g. Not bad considering it uses a 2500mAh removable battery.

To give a proper tablet with note-taking experience in smart phone form, Samsung has introduced a S-Pen stylus. This adds-on to its multi-input capabilities as it promises precise and faster pen-like writing while on the go. While this sounds similar to the HTC Flyer, the S-Pen seems to be offering more usability as an input device rather than a mere scribbler. Best of all, the S-Pen can be stored inside the device’s silo. Since this is a smart phone, it uses Android 2.3 instead of Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

Is a 5.3″ really necessary? With a higher resolution display and a stylus, it is more useful from a productivity standpoint than a 4.3″ Samsung Galaxy S II. In terms of size, this is definitely more pocket-able than a 7 inch tablet. So which size are you – 5.3″, 7″, 7.7″, 8.9″ or 10.1″?
