By the numbers: Android smart phone comparison

In just a couple of hours to go, the Samsung Galaxy S II will be officially launched in Malaysia with Maxis being the exclusive telco for the time being.

Today we are spoilt for choice with the variety of high end Android smart phones that are closely priced with each other. While this is good news for us consumers, choosing the right device can be a chore. To make it easier, we’ve come out with a simple spec by spec comparison of the top 6 Android smart phones which are priced between RM1899 and RM2299 outright without contract. The 6 devices are HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S II, Sony Ericsson Xperia arc, Motorola Atrix, HTC Incredible S and the LG Optimus 2X.

As compared on the table, the 6 offers different specifications including processor, RAM, built-in storage, display, battery, camera and dimensions. If performance is what you’re looking for, the Samsung Galaxy S II ticks all boxes with its dual-core 1.2GHz processor and a huge 1GB of RAM. It also offers the most vibrant display on paper with its Super AMOLED Plus. The Galaxy S II also happens to be the slimmest Android smart phone with an impressive 8.49mm thickness, thinner than iPhone 4’s 9.3mm.

Going back to the display, it is worth mentioning that both HTC Sensation and Motorola Atrix displays a much higher 960×540 qHD resolution which gives better clarity and pixel density especially when viewing web pages and text.

For the photobugs, the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc offers the best camera of the lot with its 8.1MP camera with Exmor R for mobile feature. As demonstrated in our first impressions, it performed amazingly well especially in low light conditions with snappy response time.

Meanwhile for those looking for dual-core smart phone on a budget, the LG Optimus 2X which we’ve reviewed earlier on meets the criteria as it is also the cheapest among the 6. That being said, we wished the software could have been better which shouldn’t be a problem for those who plan to load a custom ROM. However for an additional RM100, the Motorola Atrix offers a much more generous display resolution, 1GB of RAM and a huge 1930mAh battery.

The comparison above is to serve as a reference guide and do feel free to share your opinion in the comments below.
