While its PlayBook tablet has been getting all the limelight of late, it is definitely not the only device that’s getting all the attention at RIM. The makers of BlackBerry phones are also working on updated versions of the Curve, Bold and Torch line of phones and the first initial pictures along with preliminary specs have been leaked to the public.

BlackBerry Curve replacement — codename “Apollo”
First up we have replacement for the BlackBerry Curve. Nothing revolutionary here, the entry-level BlackBerry — condenamed “Apollo” — gets a 480×360 screen (the current BlackBerry 9300 has 320×240 pixels), an updated 800Mhz processor (up from the current 624Mhz on the 9300), a 512MB RAM (256MB on the 9300) with 512MB of on-board storage and a 5MP camera. There’s no word on whether the camera can do HD videos but we doubt that it can. Also missing is a forward facing camera. The new Curve will run on the BlackBerry 6.1 OS. Curiously, RIM has opted to include near-field communications in the upcoming Curve. A sign of this technology gaining traction? Perhaps, but it’s too early to say.
BlackBerry Bold replacement — codename “Dakota”
Next up, we have the replacement for the BlackBerry Bold, codename “Dakota”. On the outside, BlackBerry fans will be happy to note that nothing much will change physically. In fact, at first glance it still looks every bit like the current edition of the BlackBerry Bold. You do however get updated internals with a 5MP camera that comes with image stabilisation and is capable of recording HD videos. On-board storage now is 4GB (a big jump over the current’s 512MB). Screen size will also be increased slightly to 2.8 inches with a 640×480 pixel resolution compared to today’s 2.44 inch 480×360 pixel. No word on processor speed just yet but you do get a significant RAM boost at 786MB. There’s also a 3G router function built-in and that’s always useful. What is not so is the inclusion of NFC and an magnetometer — not sure if most BB users will appreciate these additions. Predictably, the Dakota will run BlackBerry 6.1 OS.
The biggest news is that this new Bold will also feature a touchscreen, but as with these things, a touchscreen Bold has not yet been confirmed.
BlackBerry Torch 2
Finally there’s the BlackBerry Torch 2. Like the “Dakota”, there’s not much to talk about on the design of the device as the Torch 2 is virtually similar to the original Torch. Internal updates include a 1.2GHz processor (original Torch — 624Mhz, RAM stays the same at 512MB), more on-board storage (8GB compared to 4GB previously). You also get an updated screen that’s the same size (3.2 inches) but has a higher resolution at 640×480 as opposed to the current 480×360 screen and that’s pretty much it.
So what do you think? We’re not too impressed considering the Motorola Atrix and the upcoming crop devices coming this year has so much more to offer. But we’re sure the BlackBerry fans will disagree. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.
