Frozen Yoghurt appears at Googleplex, Android 2.2 release is near

TechCrunch has spotted a mysteriously covered new figure at Googleplex which is believed to be the next release of the Android OS. For those who didn’t know, Google names each version of Android OS after a food or dessert of sorts. Cupcake was version 1.5, Donut was 1.6 and the latest Eclair is version 2.1. The upcoming 2.2 is called Froyo for Frozen Yoghurt (or Yogurt for US English).

There was a video showing the Froyo figure before it was wrapped but it has already been set to private. Engadget managed to get a screenshot below:

While Android 2.2 is coming real soon, most Android manufacturers are still rushing to get their existing devices updated to Android 2.1. From what we understand, the update of the OS has to come from each respective manufacturer and some are releasing as early as Q2 and some as late as Q4.

Sony Ericsson X10, their flagship Android device is still running at 1.6 with 2.1 update expected to be released only in Q4 this year. Android OS multiple version is one of the problems of having an Android. As mentioned before, majority of Android devices out there are still running 1.5/1.6 while newer apps are only compatible for 2.1 and above.

The Android team is yet to address this issue and they better do it soon. Android 2.1 users are going to feel out of date pretty soon.
