If we take at look at smartphone shipment numbers, having a selfie-centric smartphone seems to be a briliant idea. The OPPO R9s is currently the most popular Android smartphone and it is clear that both OPPO and vivo are doing well worldwide because of their popular camera/selfie focused models.
Nubia, ZTE’s independent brand wants to cash in the selfie craze by introducing two new models in Malaysia. What’s even interesting is that both are quite similar in hardware and pricing as their key competitors.
nubia M2
The nubia M2 is dubbed as their “mobile photography expert”. Like the OPPO R9s Plus and vivo V5 Plus, it gets a 5.5″ sized full HD display that uses an AMOLED panel. The similarity continues with a Snapdragon 625 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage that’s expandable via microSD. Being a premium mid-ranger, the M2 gets a metal unibody design with rounded edges for a more upmarket feel.
For taking pictures, it gets a similar setup to Huawei’s flagship series. At the rear, it gets two Sony 13MP f/2.2 cameras with one that shoots in monochrome while the other shoots in colour. Meanwhile, the front gets a 16MP f/2.0 selfie shooter with a host of beautification features.
Powering the nubia M2 is a 3,630mAh battery which charges quickly with its NeoCharge dual-protocol fast charging brick that connects via USB Type-C. Out of the box, it runs on nubia UI 4.0 that’s based on Android 6.0. The nubia M2 is officially priced at RM1,899 and it comes only in Black.
nubia M2 Lite
For the budget conscious, the M2 lite is also a 5.5″ smartphone that comes with a lower HD 720p display. Under the hood, it runs on a MediaTek MT6750 Octa-Core processor that’s also powering the vivo V5s. For Malaysia, we are also getting 4GB RAM along with 32GB of storage that’s expandable via microSD.
In terms of imaging, the M2 lite gets a 13MP f/2.2 main camera while the front gets a 16MP f/2.0 shooter with beautification features. It also gets a modest 3,000mAh battery that charges via USB Type-C. The M2 lite is listed at RM1,199 for Malaysia and it’s available in either Black Gold or Champagne Gold.
If you’re interested, both are currently available on Lazada Malaysia. For the price, there are definitely better choices if you’re comparing on hardware specs alone. The only reason you probably might consider these two is for its front camera which boasts a higher resolution 16MP shooter for selfies. Would you consider the nubia over OPPO and vivo?
