Mediatek has been popular for powering low to medium tier smart phones and now they are aiming at joining the big leagues with their Octa-Core processors. Earlier on they have announced what they claim to be the World’s first True Octa-Core processor which consists of 8 Cortex A7 cores running simultaneously.
Now they have revealed their latest Octa-Core solution that offers 4x A17 cores running at 2.2GHz to 2.5GHz and 4x A7 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. It is also mated with a Rogue PowerVR Series 6 GPU and comes with 4G LTE support as well.
The new A17 cores on the MT6595 boast a 60% performance improvement over current A9 solutions and overall it competes directly with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 805 series. Apart from that, it utilises ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture and Heterogeneous Multi-Processing. This means that it is capable of running from as little as 1-2 cores for basic operations and runs on all 8 cores for maximum performance when required.
With growing demand for high resolution displays and recording, the MT6595 processor also comes with built-in H.265 UltraHD Codec which allows 4K2K video recording and playback. The sampling of the chips will begin the first half of this year and it is likely to appear on high end smart phones commercially towards the second half of 2014.
